Loggerhead Shrike (8 by 10" acrylic on canvas) In Private Collection
A very beautiful, and interesting bird. When going for a walk or drive on the open prairies during the summer you may be lucky enough to see these wonderful birds with their striking pattern of colours. They have a small hook on their beak which helps them grab their prey. The interesting thing about these birds is that they will usually impale their prey on the spikes of Hawthorn bushes or barbs on barbed wire fences where they will start tearing it apart and consuming it. They can be seen doing this from grasshoppers to Short-Horned Lizards.
