I wanted to portray a peaceful uncertainty within this small painting. A Mule deer buck ventures away from the viewer towards the edge of a coulee system into the unknown. The deer appears confident and composed in his stance. However, his ears are turned back towards the viewer, perhaps the only attention he will be giving to whatever may be calling him back from his endeavour. He is on no trail, no path, but making his own. The viewer cannot quite make out what the animal is walking into aside from what looks to be a valley with some steep shadow filled coulees on the other side. The mystery with this piece is what this place is exactly, is the animal heading into the valley of shadows, or something of great beauty? We may never know.
I think sometimes the beauty in whatever it is we are seeking is the uncertainty of not knowing what happens next. The only way we can ever find out is to keep on going in spite of fear, excitement, sadness, or joy.
